Turkey Day Top Ten

Today, my family as well as some new extended family will gather around a table and feast on a bountiful meal before finding a place on the comfortable couch and closing our eyes for a moment to enjoy a day of rest. Our family is living in different parts of the country than last year and next year who knows where we all will be. While we are apart, we are thankful for each blessing provided to us.

In honor of Thanksgiving, here are the Preacher’s Pen Top Five Signs You Ate Too Much at Thanksgiving:

5 – There is nothing to clean-up but your shirt.

4 – You do not consider one Turducken a challenge.

3 – You consider the man who invented the elastic waistband your new hero.

2 – Someone mentions gluttony and you ask for another helping.

1 – When your family wants you, they yell, “HEY! Kool-Aid!”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Falling Snow and My Lord

Yesterday morning, I continued the Gallagher tradition of deer hunting over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was a day late due to a nice little thing called “the Stomach Bug,” but I was glad to make the trip and take advantage the the opportunity.

Leaving my dad’s house at 5:30 am took much effort to awaken from slumber and get dressed for the 20 degree weather, not counting the wind and snow. After traveling to the hunting club, we split ways; dad went to the top of the hill and I walked the road to the river and back. It is this time of the year I look forward to each year. Contrary to popular belief, it is not deer hunting that brings me great joy, it is the time spent in the woods walking, breathing, and meditating on God’s precious creation from beginning to end.

The highlight of each day, is the time spent talking with my father. We reminisce from birth to the future and even what lies beyond. Our talks are filled with laughter, tears and peace. Each year, this week clears my mind and causes me to become even more thankful than the year before.

While walking in the woods at 6:45 am, God brought something I have not seen in two years. God reigned down giant flakes of snow from the Earth’s highest skies and brought them to my presence. I have seen flakes a time or two over two years, but remember I live in South Carolina where “It shall not snow” is a commandment; it is number 11 if you are counting.

The snow poured from the heavens and landed on the ground all around me and even began to rest on my head, shoulders and pack as I stopped for a moment to enjoy the wonders of my Lord’s creation. Within moments, the footprints I just left were covered. As I focused my eyes toward heaven, I thanked God for the day he was giving. My heart felt at ease, the troubles of life faded away as the footprints I just left.

Isn’t it amazing when you focus heavenward, God’s covers the groundwork?

Just a thought,

Chris
