Chris, another very basic issue is the mission of the church. We're not sure why we're here. We think Christ's mission was to be a sacrifice for sin, but we're not sure what to do with that, nor do we have an idea as to how painting somebody's house in Central America is supposed to lead to somebody's salvation. (Hint: it doesn't.) The church is spending billions in disaster relief while evangelism goes lacking for cross-cultural evangelists. Some say it's not an either-or issue, but it appears to be so, since funds that could support missions is going for benevolence, which has been re-labeled to assuage guilt.

Chris,

Thanks for writing an article that opens dialogue and should get people thinking. I like your term "selfish terrorism."

I have not taken the time to follow Tim's links above, but I think they have to do with the inconsistency of those who are are for abortion are typically against the death penalty and those who are for the death penalty are typically against abortion. I don't have an answer for me, much less any one else.

I do believe we each will stand before God for our individual actions and that messages like the one you present above may help us to examine ourselves so that we can stand before God having done all to stand in the Grace He offers through His Son.

Chris,

I've become more and more intrigued by the Consistent Life Ethic. Even though it challenges some of what I have traditionally believed, it does present a consistent challenge to all taking of human life. One main website is here: http://www.consistent-life.org/

Dancing my way through the political minefield, I'm wondering how you feel Christians should live out the biblical mandate to "honor the king" when so many obviously don't respect our elected officials. Any thoughts?

Grace and peace,
Tim

Excellent thoughts, brother! I agree, it all boils down to "what I want." I often say, "The church is not a Burger King, you don't get to have it your way!" Thanks for the encouragement this morning, brother! Keep up the great work!

Chris,

I believe that figure of speech is called synecdoche, where a part is used to signify the whole. Just as Solomon's criticism of sleep is actually a condemnation of slothfulness, the verses about alcoholic drink should be seen as referring to drunkenness, not the beverages themselves.

And, so you know, I think "barhopping" is a good example of the abuse of alcohol. Let's not confuse the abuse of something with the thing itself. For example, materialism is a real problem in this country, yet that doesn't mean we can't own anything. There are many workaholics, yet we know that work in and of itself isn't evil. Personally I feel that nationalism is a terrible problem in the church today, particularly in the United States, but that doesn't mean we all have to move to the wilderness.
