Wednesdays in the Word – January 20, 2021

Welcome to "Wednesdays in the Word" on the Preacher's Pen

This morning's "Wednesday in the Word" discusses the Parable of the Rich Fool found in Luke 12.16-21.

In our quick class this morning we examine this parable and point out the significance of understanding the background to the parable. When one knows the background, it only makes this parable more meaningful and helps us to see why Jesus was speaking this parable.

Join us in our class and see what you can put into practice today. If you would like a copy of the outline for today's lessons, you can find it in PDF form by clicking below.

A Man of Decisions

A Man of Decisions

I sit here, late at night.

My desk is the kitchen table. The only sounds are the ticking of the two clocks on opposite sides of the room.

My family sleeps soundly in their beds. They have been a sleep a few hours now.

Outside, it is quiet too. I can hear the occasional passing car only between the ticks of the clocks.

Tonight, I wonder.

I wonder about the future. The future of a nation, our friendship, our families, the economy and the church.

Foremost, I said “wonder” not “worry.” There is a difference.

Wonder is where your minds travels to heights and places unknown. It takes glimpse beyond the present condition and finds itself in the world of imagination.

I wonder.

Have you ever wondered?

Tonight, I wonder about one thing, the future. Tomorrow, it will be something else.

Let me tell you why…

Several years ago, a man made a choice. He had the world at his feet, but he still made a choice. He could have done nothing, but he made a sound choice.

His choice would lead him through a world of pain, turmoil, travels, a major life change, and much loss.

It does not sound like a choice many of us would make, but he made it. The story is he made it pretty quickly.

Why did he make the choice that would change the direction of his life so quickly?

Why didn’t he just do nothing and enjoy his life of luxury?

The reason…

…He knew where he came from.

While he might have been enjoying the greatness of an exceptional physical life, he needed more. He knew more.

He had been taught from a young age where his family had lived. He knew of their heritage, their trials, their good times and their bad times. He knew their legacy.

He knew where he wanted to go and who he wanted to be near. He knew the right choice and he made it.

In taking the actions of his decision, he had to leave where he was living, leave his belongings and find a new home in a distant land.

I would imagine he did not understand where he would go, but he had to go. He had to escape. He must.

Years later, this man would reflect on his heritage. He would hear of his legacy. He would understand. It was his turn to bring it all to the right way again.

It was he that would change the course of his people’s history… with a little help.

His name was Moses.

Tough choices make for healthy people.

Godly choices make for Godly people.

Read more about Moses in Exodus.

Tonight, what decisions do you need to make?

What tough choices must you take action upon?

The Old, Worn Out Bible

The Old, Worn Out Bible

Do you remember the Bible of your grandparents? Maybe you remember the Bible of your parents? Do you remember their old, worn out Bible?

It does not matter if it was a $10 Bible from the General Store or from Walmart, but you remember that old, worn out Bible. Today, every Christian needs one of those old, worn out Bibles.

A worn-out Bible is a well-read, well-studied Bible. It has been read, studied, carried, shared and used.  A well-worn Bible usually lives in the home of a studied Christian. The hours of reading of the sacred text can be seen in the worn pages, the cracks in the cover and the break in the binding.

With the age of technology, we have been blessed with the ability to carry a Bible wherever we go. Instead of carrying a scroll, like the first century (Luke 4.17-20; Acts 8.28), we can carry all 66 books in different electronic forms.

The blessing of having the inspired word of God is something every Christian needs to appreciate daily.

How do you get a worn-out Bible?

You will get a worn-out Bible when you open it daily and use it. Reading through the Bible each year will break your Bible in but studying your Bible will begin to do much more. Studying your Bible will result in many pages being turned and pages being worn out.

The more you discover in the Bible, the more you will want to dig into its message.  You will find the Word of God to be living, active and piercing our souls and our minds (Hebrews 4.12).

So, what does your Bible look like?

Two Daily Bible Reading Programs

Two Daily Bible Reading Programs

The new year is approaching! Are you ready?

A few years ago I found a couple daily Bible reading schedules and developed some study questions each week for them. This year I want to share the questions with you each week to assist you in your studies.

Once of these studies takes its daily Bible reading from five passages from different sections of the Bible. There is one passages for each day. By the end of the year following this reading program, you will have read throughout the entire Bible.

The second study allows one to begin in the Gospel of Matthew and read to Revelation in 26 weeks. Following this plan will cover the entire New Testament in 6 months.

Note: I do not have a copy of the particular reading schedule charts that I developed these questions from several years ago.  If you are familiar with them, let me know. I would like to have a copy of the charts again. Thank you.

What Would Make You Give Up Being a Christian?

What Would Make You Give Up Being a Christian?

Before you read on, take note that the only thing that “makes” us give up being a Christian is us. While one might blame other things, people or teachings, the fact is that it is one’s decision. Various factors may affect our decision, but ultimately, the decision is still our responsibility.

With that in mind, consider the findings from Amy Black. Dr. Black is a political science professor at Wheaton College in Illinois, and the author of Honoring God in Red or Blue. She earned her Ph.D. in political science at MIT and is a leader in research on the intersection of religion and politics.

In a 2019 interview, Dr. Black shared the following disconcerting information: “Studies show that party identity is even stronger than religious identity for many people. That means many ‘Christians’ would stop being a Christian before they stopped being a Democrat or Republican.” She paused and then added, “Think about that.”

For a moment, think about that.

When Christ takes second place to politics or anything else, the results will not be good.

What would make you give up being a Christian?

Politics? Sports? Work? Fame? Fortune?

May we find the strength of faith that will allow us to place Christ at the forefront of all.
