31 Days with Jesus
John 3:1-21 and John 7:50-51 introduce us to Nicodemus, a respected religious leader who comes to Jesus at night with honest questions. Despite his status and knowledge, Nicodemus senses there’s something different about Jesus—something he desperately needs. Jesus welcomes his curiosity and speaks one of the most important truths in all of Scripture: “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus struggles to understand. How can someone be born again? Jesus explains that this new birth isn’t only physical—it’s spiritual.  There are two components to being born again: the water and the spirit.

It’s a transformation that comes from above, through the work of the Holy Spirit. We’re invited to leave behind our old ways and receive a brand-new start, made possible by God’s love and grace.

In this conversation, Jesus shares the heart of the gospel: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) This promise isn’t just for Nicodemus—it’s for everyone who longs for hope, forgiveness, and a fresh beginning.

Nicodemus’ journey didn’t end that night. Later, he would defend Jesus among the religious leaders and help care for His body after the crucifixion. His story shows that faith is a process, and honest questions can lead to lasting transformation.

As you reflect on Nicodemus’ encounter with Jesus, remember that new life is always available. No matter your past, you can be born again—renewed by God’s Spirit and welcomed into His family.

Jesus included two words when talking with Nicodemus that occur when discussing being “born again.” Those words are water and spirit.

Four Points to Remember:
  • Being “born again” means receiving a new spiritual life through faith and following what Jesus has asked.
  • God’s love is for everyone—no one is beyond the reach of His grace.
  • Honest questions and seeking can lead to deep transformation and faith.
  • Eternal life starts now, as we trust Jesus and allow Him to renew us from the inside out.
